Comments - Guilford County School Bond
May 24, 2020
I would personally like to thank all nine of our current Guilford County Commissioners for their dedication and time given to the Citizens of Guilford County. Decisions made today will affect future generations.
We all have been affected by the Covid19 Pandemic and there are still many questions unanswered. Our community, like the rest of the world has suffered great heartache due to health and economic conditions. No one can say with certainty what the next year will bring. Will our economy bounce back quickly or will we sink into another downturn?
What I can say with certainty is that we must provide a safe environment in our schools. A school bond will most certainly be on the ballot in November. There is no guarantee that the Bond will pass, no matter the amount. The public will decide if now is the right time.
I know $300 million might not be the amount that the study recommends, but with the economic climate as it is, I’m positive this decision was made on, what most would agree, the county can support at this time. With the uncertainty of Guilford County tax revenues, the county still has to maintain all services for all citizens.
Let’s look ahead and think of how we can get critical repairs done to every school today, including mold remediation, roof and heating system repairs. These items must be done first, before any new or replacement schools are built. Then, we can begin to rebuild and ask for additional funding on a new school bond in the future.
We will trust our school board to get the most bang for the buck as they start repairing our schools!
